- Astaxanthin - an organic chemical compound belonging to the xanthophyll group. Like most carotenoids, it is fat-soluble. This substance is naturally produced by marine algae, for which it acts as a sunscreen. It also imparts a red colour to shrimps, crustacean shells and salmon. Astaxanthin destroys free radicals and supports the immune system.
